Flooring

One of the most important aspects of any home is the flooring. Your floors take up almost as much space inside your home as your walls, so you want your floors to be practical, functional, and attractive. Flooring options can range from the traditional carpet, to hardwood, to laminate flooring. Each type of flooring has its own advantages and disadvantages, which can impact the value of a home. The flooring experts at Sierra Verde Home Design Center can walk you through the different flooring options and their corresponding benefits and drawbacks, letting you make the best choice in choosing flooring that will fit your personality and lifestyle.

Types of Flooring

As with most things in a home, there’s no one size fits all type of flooring. Some families prefer hard, durable flooring throughout their home, while others like to fit their floors to the specific purpose of each room. There’s no right or wrong answer, so let’s talk about what types of flooring we offer and where each variety would work best in your home.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is a prevalent choice for many homeowners as it looks incredible and offers numerous benefits. The most obvious reason to love wood floors is their classic aesthetic appeal. Hardwood adds warmth and character to any space, and a lighter shade of stain can make rooms feel larger. Your hardwood flooring won’t stain the way carpets can. If you have a spill, wipe it up and get on with your day. Anything crafted using hardwood is known for its strength and durability, and flooring is no exception. Yes, wood floors can be scratched or dented, but those things are easy to avoid with a bit of preventative action. Remove your shoes at the door, place area rugs in high-traffic areas, and regularly sweep to remove any surface dirt. That’s all it takes to have solid floors that will last upwards of 30 years and can be refinished if you change your home’s decor. We carry hardwood flooring from top brands, including Mohawk and Urban Floor.

Carpet

Carpet has gotten a bad rap for holding germs and allergens, but modern carpets are much easier to clean and hold fewer bacteria than materials from years past. This type of flooring is also safer for homes with children or elderly family members as it provides more cushion after slips and falls. It’s not all about function, though. You can purchase carpets in various colors, patterns, and textures to suit any style in your home. Carpeting is also a warm, comfortable surface to sit on during family games or movie nights. Wool carpet from Masland Carpets naturally purifies the air and is also flame resistant with a very high ignition point, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms and playrooms.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl floors have been a mainstay in homes for decades due to vinyl’s durability and easy maintenance. The introduction of luxury vinyl flooring from companies such as COREtec has made this type more popular and versatile. Luxury vinyl planks are waterproof and incredibly resilient, so they’re a fantastic choice for kitchens, dining rooms, and living rooms. You can have the beautiful appearance of a hardwood floor with the durability of vinyl. What’s not to love about that? Vinyl floors are also super easy to clean. No matter how great your floors look, nobody wants to spend hours cleaning their floors to keep them looking good.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate floors are one of the most cost-effective options available. Floors made of laminate are also scratch and stain-resistant and will not fade with sun exposure. Many people opt for laminate flooring that looks like hardwood or stone, but you can select from many different colors and styles to suit any area in your home. The protective top layer of laminate makes it nearly indestructible, but we don’t recommend you try to prove that. Laminate and vinyl flooring are very similar, but laminate floors allow you to achieve the look of more materials, including stone and tile, while vinyl floors can withstand higher amounts of moisture.

Our Favorites

The final decision always lies with you, but our flooring experts are always happy to make recommendations and provide advice. For example, hardwood isn’t the best choice for areas of your home with high moisture or humidity, like bathrooms or basements. Engineered hardwood from Mohawk and Urban Floor is more resilient in these environments and looks just like the genuine article. Carpet is recommended near entryways due to staining and fiber crushing but is a very solid choice for family rooms, bedrooms, and playrooms. Laminate and vinyl flooring are very durable and scratch-resistant, and both can perform about equally well in most rooms of your home.
